NEW YORK, Sept. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- On Thursday, September 15 PBS will present a special 30th anniversary broadcast of one of the most critically acclaimed television events of all-time, The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman (9:00 - 11:00 PM ET/PT). To help commemorate the anniversary telecast, Grammy Award-winner and Academy Award nominee, Queen Latifah, has taped a special introduction, which addresses the impact the movie has had on American culture and television.
This television classic is the winner of nine Emmy(R) Awards, including "Outstanding Special," "Best Actress" and "Best Direction." Starring Cicely Tyson in her Emmy-winning role as Miss Jane Pitman, this powerful story of the Black American experience chronicles the life of a 110 year-old former slave.
The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman made its primetime debut on CBS and pre-dated such TV specials as Roots. For 30 years, the special has been heralded as a poignant and epic drama prompting renowned film critic, Leonard Maltin, to claim that it is "one of TV's all-time best." The special is also available on a 30th Anniversary Collector's Edition DVD.
Synopsis
Based on the best-selling novel by Ernest J. Gaines, The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman is an inspiring story of human dignity. This fictionalized historical drama from director John Korty follows Jane Pittman on her incredible life journey from the end of the Civil War in the 1860s through the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. Through the years Jane survives the last vestiges of slavery in Louisiana, Jim Crow laws, encounters with the KKK and the slaying of her husband, only to triumph in the end over social injustice.
