According to the United Drive-In Theatre Owners Association, since 2000, 21 new drive-ins were opened or are currently under construction within the United States, with over 30 that were previously closed having been reopened. The phenomenon is worldwide as well, with new drive-ins being built in China, Russia, Indonesia and Canada.
Many of the currently operating drive-ins are expected to expand in the next year. Business Trend Analysts, Inc. is reporting that the number of screens per drive-in theatre is expected to reach an average of 3 screens per drive-in by 2006.
