HBO Short Film Grand Prize at 9th Annual Film Life and HBO American Black Film Festival

NEW YORK, July 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Home Box Office awarded a $20,000 grand prize for the 2005 HBO Short Film Award to co-writers Jonathan David Boyce and Jonathan Levine, who also directed, for their film "Shards." The grand prize was given out by Olivia Smashum, executive vice president, Affiliate Marketing at HBO and actress Tracee Ellis Ross during the Film Life and HBO American Black Film Festival's award ceremonies on Saturday, July 16 in South Beach, Florida. The film follows the story of a DJ and graffiti artist who struggles to kick a drug habit after a friend overdoses.
Four other films also competed and were awarded $5,000 each: "The Catalyst," written and directed by Marcus Stokes; "In Time, written by Adetoro Makinde and co-directed by Makinde and Maurice Dwyer; "The Male Groupie, written by Morocco Omari and directed by Chris Scott Cherot; and "Seeker," co- written and directed by Omelihu Nwanguma and Adam Hutchings.
The HBO Short Film Award, created in 1998, serves to recognize and encourage artistic excellence in black cinema, and has been a staple in the American Black Film Festival's competitive film showcase since its inception.
