Every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday night through the month of April theater companies from across Los Angeles will present the competitions top finalists, concluding Thursday, April 27th with a reading of the Screenplay Competition's first place winner, Preeti Girl. All Slamdance on Stage readings take place at 7:30 pm at The Village at Ed Gould Plaza, Renberg Theatre (1125 North McCadden Place, Hollywood, CA 90038). Entry is FREE and open to the public. A brief Q&A will follow readings where the screenwriter is present. Receptions with food and beverages will take place before and after every reading.

“Slamdance's staged reading series has proven to be the best way to show appreciation for our award winning screenwriters and showcase the quality of their writing for audiences and industry members” says John Stoddard, Director of the Slamdance Screenplay and Teleplay Competitions.

Selected readings will feature one or more guest celebrity actors. A complete list of screenplays, writers and featured actors is below. Be the first to hear "Tomorrow's Films on Stage Today".

SLAMDANCE OVERVIEW – BY FILMMAKERS FOR FILMMAKERS

As a year round organization, Slamdance serves as a showcase for the discovery of emerging talent and is dedicated to new filmmakers and their vision. Started in 1995 by a group of filmmakers, Slamdance continues to be organized and programmed “by filmmakers for filmmakers”. The annual Festival has been headquartered at Park City’s Treasure Mountain Inn since 1997. Slamdance has established a unique reputation for premiering independent films by first-time directors working with limited budgets. With a renowned film festival as its core, Slamdance has expanded its ventures to include thriving Screenplay and Teleplay competitions, slamdance.com, the Anarchy online short film competition, Dirty Dozen short film DVD series, a $99 Special short film production wing, a Games competition and a newly formed 99K Feature Project educational program.

Slamdance receives over 3000 film submissions and 2500 screenplay and teleplay submissions per year. Films premiering at Slamdance have won Independent Spirit Awards, the Palme d’Or and an Oscar. Alumni who premiered their films at Slamdance include Memento and Batman Begins director Christopher Nolan, Monster’s Ball and Finding Neverland director Marc Forster and Traffic director Steven Soderbergh. Ray McKinnon, whose film The Accountant played at Slamdance in 2001 went on to win the 2002 Academy Award for Best Short Film. Every year several Slamdance films are picked up for distribution. Jared Hess’ short film Peluca played at the 2003 Film Festival where it was seen by producers, and went on to become the feature hit Napoleon Dynamite. The 2005 Slamdance Opening Night film Mad Hot Ballroom was acquired by Paramount Classics during the festival and went on to gross over $9 million in domestic box office. Participation in the Slamdance Film Festival helped promote these first-time filmmakers, advancing them to the next phase of their careers. Slamdance winning screenplays picked up for production include Nicole Kassell and Stephen Fetcher's The Woodsman, Joshua Marston's Maria Full of Grace and Tim Boughn's Neo Ned. In 2004 the screenplay competition launched a new division dedicated to the teleplay. This competition is sponsored by fox21 and offers its winner a development deal. Also in 2004, Slamdance launched its Gamemaker competition to help aspiring game developers and independent game design. As a result, Slamdance games and gamemakers have received design and distribution deals, including the 2005 Jury Award Revolved that received a distribution deal from Gametrust. Slamdance 2006 audience favorites included world premieres of Abduction The Megumi Yokota Story, executive produced by Jane Campion, and The Sasquatch Dumpling Gang acquired by Sony BMG.

As Slamdance has expanded, so has its reach. Slamdance events take place year-round in various international cities including Los Angeles, New York City, Salt Lake City, Amsterdam, Cannes, Wroclawski, Beijing and Bombay.

Slamdance’s future goal is to strengthen its year-round organization by further developing branded ventures and support of emerging filmmaking talent.
